Lonnie Jackson Academy's Characteristics Lonnie Jackson Academy was built in the l950’s as Eastway Elementary to serve a portion of the southeastern section of Columbus, Georgia. The community L.J.A. serves is urban, consisting of mainly one-family homes that are purchased or rented by the occupants. In 2001 renovations of the existing building was begun. Classrooms received new paint, floor tile, dry erased boards, and bulletin boards. The school is in the process of being wired for networking with the media center. Student bathrooms were remodeled, with provisions for the handicapped. Hallways were also painted and the floors redone. The mail office was revamped to include a mailroom and a clinic. A new counselor’s office now provides a private area for counseling services for students, parents and teachers. L.J.A.’s cafeteria was enlarged to provide additional seating and a second serving line was added. However, the second line is not currently being utilized. A freestanding gymnasium and art and music rooms have also been constructed on the L.J.A. campus. A new computer lab was added in the summer of 2004. Some grading work has been done to improve the playground conditions on our lower field. The instructional day for L.J.A. is from 8:45 to 3:l5 p.m. for all students, grades pre-kindergarten through fifth. 07/29/2008 |
